In brief

After a 90‑minute operation to remove a lung tumour, Vatican doctors confirmed that Pope Leo X is cancer‑free and no further treatment is required. The 71‑year‑old left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after the surgery and has already returned to his weekly audience at St Peter’s Square. Alongside his good health news, the Pope remains active, calling for peace in Ukraine and planning a Latin‑America trip for early November.

Vatican doctors announced that Pope Leo X is clear of his lung cancer after the surgery that removed a tumour. Tiny tissue samples confirmed the tumour was an adenocarcinoma confined to one part of his lung, so no chemo or radiotherapy is on the schedule.

The 71‑year‑old left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday after the 90‑minute operation and is back in the world’s biggest congregation. He was welcomed at St. Peter’s Square for his first weekly general audience since the operation.

While the health news lights a hopeful beam, the pontiff doesn’t slow down. He has urged leaders over the phone for a ceasefire in the blockaded Ukrainian city of Oleshky and talked to President Vladimir Putin about getting food aid to families in need. He’s also called for dialogue and peace in the region, emphasising the Church’s role in global calm.

Looking ahead, vicarious fans are already turning to his upcoming Latin‑America trip scheduled for early November, where he will visit several countries to meet locals and promote peace talks.
