On 8 July, President Trump boarded what seemed to be Air Force One in Ankara. Secret Service agents secretly slipped him into a catering truck, giving him a covert hop on a different military plane. Two cabinet aides—Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent—remained on the first plane to keep the line of succession intact.
The initial jet kept its call sign, making it a decoy. Other officials such as deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and communications director Steven Cheung were also on that flight. Trump said the move was ordered by the military and Secret Service amid an “unknown threat.”
Decoy operations are not new—Bill Clinton once flew in an unmarked jet that followed a mock Air Force One. Whether the occupants in Ankara faced any danger remains unclear, and the White House has yet to comment on the details.
