Wildfires Rage Across Europe
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was heckled at a town hall meeting in Le Porge, where 183 homes were lost to the flames. Residents demanded answers about why the fire was managed the way it was and how quickly the government could help rebuild.
Lecornu announced €12 million in aid for the Gironde and Landes regions – €10 million to Gironde and €2 million to Landes – and said new building permits would be issued “within a month” to speed recovery.
Wildfires are pushing campaigns beyond France. In Belgium, a blaze in the Hautes Fagnes has grown to the largest in recent history, while Greek authorities are battling twin fires on Salamina Island. In Croatia, a blaze burns across the coast, forcing evacuations of over 1,200 residents and tourists.
The European Union is deploying extra forces: Belgium has welcomed 104 firefighters with 36 vehicles from France, as well as air support from the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Sweden. Meanwhile, Greece’s fire service reports 41 new forest fires, and a standalone incident on an island near Athens caused two deaths and widespread evacuations.
