In brief
The British military has executed its first joint operation with the US against Houthi targets in Yemen since President Trump's return to office. Conducted under “Operation Rough Rider,” the strike aimed to diminish Houthi military strength and protect international shipping in the region.
In a notable military initiative, British forces joined US troops in a strike against Houthi militia in Yemen, marking the first collaboration since President Trump re-assumed office. The operation, initiated late at night, aimed to "degrade Houthi capabilities" and protect international shipping routes, according to the British Defense Ministry. Typhoon jets deployed precision-guided bombs targeting Houthi facilities located 15 miles south of Sana, the Yemeni capital, which were believed to be involved in drone manufacturing. The British Ministry of Defense emphasized precautions taken to minimize civilian risk during the operation, which followed a recent upsurge in Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea connected to their stand with Palestinians in Gaza. Previously, British forces had participated in operations ordered by former President Biden, but this marks a new level of commitment under Trump’s intensified military strategy, known as “Operation Rough Rider.” So far, American forces have targeted over 800 sites in their ongoing campaign. The joint mission also comes amid concerns regarding the security of shared military details, raising questions about international cooperation in future operations.
