In brief

Kim Seongmin, a North Korean defector, continues his essential broadcasts into North Korea, despite being terminally ill, to pierce through the regime's propaganda.

For over two decades, Kim Seongmin has dedicated his life to broadcasting news into North Korea via Free North Korea Radio, despite battling terminal cancer. He broadcasts twice daily, aiming to break the oppressive silence that the regime enforces on its citizens. Living in South Korea, he believes that "the people are like frogs trapped in a deep well," unaware of the outside world. The North Korean government, under Kim Jong-un’s leadership, has intensified its measures against foreign influences, employing punishments as severe as public executions against anyone caught consuming South Korean media or even adopting its styles or language. Kim continues his broadcasts, hoping to inspire awakening among the North Korean populace, presenting them with truths that the state tries to conceal.
