In brief

A groundbreaking assessment suggests that tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security requires a holistic approach rather than isolated efforts.

Despite challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss, a recent report commissioned by 147 countries argues it's time to rethink our strategies. The current fragmented approaches, which often worsen the problems, need to be replaced with a comprehensive model that recognizes the connections between climate, food, water, and health.Dr. Paula Harrison, co-chair of the assessment, highlights that viewing issues in isolation has led to inefficiencies. For instance, the debilitating disease schistosomiasis, prevalent in Africa, thrives due to invasive aquatic plants fueled by fertilizer runoff. Instead of merely treating its symptoms, a project in Senegal tackled the issue by removing these invasive plants. The result? A 32% drop in infections among children, plus the added benefit of repurposing the cleared vegetation as cattle feed, boosting food production. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services reported that integrating native vegetation in farming and strategically planting trees can simultaneously improve biodiversity, food output, human health, water quality, and combat climate change. It’s a call for a united front in the environmental battle, proving the best solutions often lie in collaboration.
