In brief

Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov was arrested shortly after he returned from his risky adventure, where he disregarded strict laws prohibiting contact with the isolated tribe.

In a daring move that put his life at risk, 24-year-old Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov ventured out alone to North Sentinel Island, home to the sentinelese tribe, known for their fierce protection of their territory. Armed with just a Diet Coke and a coconut as offerings, he thought that filming this encounter on a GoPro would be a unique YouTube moment. Using GPS, he made it to shore on March 29, checked for inhabitants, and left his gifts before recording his escapade. However, his return on March 31 led to an arrest in Port Blair, the archipelago’s capital. Indian laws are crystal clear about this isolated tribe: no outside contact. A tragic reminder of the risks involved occurred in 2018 when an American missionary lost his life under similar circumstances after stepping onto their territory. Polyakov would do well to remember that the Sentinelese are uninterested in interaction, preferring their ancient ways untouched.
