What happened?

Three Saudi citizens and a pilot from state carrier Saudia died when missiles struck Riyadh’s international airport. The civil‑aviation authority said the attack caused injuries to many Saudis and foreign residents.

Earlier this week the Houthis had hit other Saudi airports, including Abha and King Khalid, killing several people.

Why it matters:

  • Missiles were fired from Yemen, where the Houthi rebels control most of the north‑west territory.

  • Saudi Arabia has led a coalition fighting the Houthis and has faced dozens of air‑strike attacks.

  • These clashes threaten the Red Sea’s narrow Bab al‑Mandab Strait, the main route for global shipping.

  • The escalation shows how local wars can impact international trade and security.

Despite the blasts, air traffic resumed in Riyadh, but officials and witnesses reported many injuries. The incident highlights the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire to protect civilians and the region’s key maritime routes.
