In brief
Australian cyclist Rohan Dennis has accepted a plea deal for creating a risk of harm after a fatal vehicle incident involving his wife, Melissa Hoskins, who was left critically injured while on the hood of his car.
Rohan Dennis, a 34-year-old Olympic cyclist from Australia, recently pleaded guilty to a charge in connection with the tragic death of his wife, fellow cyclist Melissa Hoskins. The incident occurred last December when Dennis drove with Hoskins on the hood of his vehicle, leading to a fatal injury. Hoskins, celebrated for her achievements in cycling, passed away at the age of 32 in a hospital in Adelaide. In Adelaide Magistrates Court, Dennis pleaded guilty to creating a risk of harm, a lesser charge that could carry up to seven years of imprisonment, a significant reduction from the initial charges of dangerous driving causing death which could have led to a 15-year sentence. The magistrate explained that the nature of their relationship aggravated the offense, indicating potential recklessness on Dennis's part. Pending his sentencing set for January, Dennis has been released on bail, as the cycling community grapples with the devastating loss.
