Skyrising: India's New Space Taxi Just Took Off

What if getting a satellite into orbit felt as easy as ordering a cab? Skyroot Aerospace’s first orbital launch proves it’s not just a dream anymore. On Saturday, the company’s seven‑storey Vikram‑1 lifted off from India’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre, travelling 280 miles (450 km) to reach low Earth orbit in just 16 minutes.

Vikram‑1, named after the nation’s space pioneer Vikram Sarabhai, carries a 350‑kg payload—enough to send small satellites into orbit without the long wait of shared launch schedules. Skyroot’s CEO Pawan Chandana says the goal is a “cab service to space”: customers can book a dedicated rocket to place their satellite or visit a station, moving beyond the fixed‑date model of big‑fleet rockets.

The test payload included scientific tools—a robotic arm for space debris removal, an Earth‑observation camera, and a German satellite—plus two symbolic items that captured the imagination of India: a tiny diamond lotus called Cosmic Bloom and micro‑sculptures of Nobel laureate C. V. Raman, aerospace engineer APJ Abdul Kalam, and Vikram Sarabhai himself. “We’re paying tribute to those who shaped India's space legacy,” Chandana explained.

With this launch, Skyroot becomes only the third country—after the US and China—to offer a private orbital launch service. The company plans another test flight this year before going commercial next year, with the capacity to build a new rocket every month from its Hyderabad factory.

India is eyeing grand projects: an astronaut mission next year, a Venus orbiter by 2028, and a space station by 2035. Skyroot’s on‑demand model could support these ambitions and tap an enormous market for global satellites—from agriculture to disaster management, connectivity, and beyond.
