In brief
A parliamentary intelligence report warns that Iran is increasing its espionage activities and posing threats to dissidents and Jewish targets in the U.K., calling for stronger responses to safeguard British security.
Britain's Intelligence and Security Committee has raised the alarm regarding a surge in threats from Iranian espionage and assassination efforts. In a damning report, the committee highlighted that Iranian operatives have targeted dissidents living in the U.K. and have intensified their surveillance of Jewish and Israeli organizations. This report is based on extensive interviews with intelligence leaders and classified documents over the past two years. Since early 2022, at least 15 attempts on the lives of British nationals and residents linked to Iran have been recorded. The report further states that Iranian authorities do not see these attacks as violations against the U.K., but instead consider them as collateral damage in their quest to maintain control over dissenters. MI5 has noted that individuals viewed as threats to the Iranian regime are particularly vulnerable. The committee advises the U.K. government and its allies to unequivocally communicate to Iran that such actions will be treated as attacks on British soil, emphasizing the need for a united front against these threats.
