Zolani Tete, the South African boxing star, was shot dead outside his home.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the ambush that killed the two‑time world champion. A 22‑year‑old suspect will appear in court on Monday and face murder and attempted‑murder charges; the other three were booked over the weekend.

Tete, 38, was waiting outside his house when two attackers in balaclavas opened fire on him and a woman he was with. The woman was seriously injured and is in hospital.

On the ring side, Tete held the WBO bantamweight title from 2017‑2019 and the IBF super‑flyweight title in 2014. He also smashed a Guinness world record for the quickest knockout in a title fight, 11 seconds in 2017.

A 2022 bout ended as a no‑contest after a positive test for the steroid stanozolol. The ban that sparked the no‑contest lasted four years and lifted this July, after which the boxer reportedly trained for a comeback.

South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said the country had lost “one of the finest fighters it has ever produced,” while former minister Fikile Mbalula praised Tete as “a great South African who made an immense contribution to boxing.”

The case is still fresh—law‑enforcement officials are keen to bring the suspects to justice as the nation mourns a star whose career was as dramatic in the ring as it is now, off‑ring.
