In brief

Storm Adam sent relentless rain over southern France, turning roads into rivers and swallowing homes. Four people lost their lives, one injured, while towns like Mouriès and Saint‑Martin‑de‑Crau had to seek shelter in emergency centres. The flood also halted trains and buses, sparking a nationwide alert for the next system, Storm Austen. Rescue crews and authorities are on high alert as the water rises further.

What Happened?

Storm Adam dumped record‑breaking rain over southern France, turning streets into rivers. The water flooded homes, cut off roads, and forced people into emergency shelters.

Who Was Affected?

Four people died, including an 86‑year‑old and a 26‑year‑old found drowned in a cellar. An 86‑year‑old woman and a 26‑year‑old woman also lost their lives in a flooded cellar. In Corsica a 4x4 was swept away; one driver escaped, another died. One injured person was reported near the towns of Mouriès and Saint‑Martin‑de‑Crau.

How Is the Country Responding?

The Bouches‑du‑Rhone prefect, Jacques Witkowski, said the water had risen to "unprecedented levels" and that authorities were mobilised on a "exceptional level". Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot posted on X that roads and train lines were disrupted.

Météo‑France has issued an orange‑level wind warning for five western departments for Friday as Storm Austen approaches. Citizens are warned to stay indoors and check local alerts.

What About Spain?

Spain also felt the blow, with three deaths in Eastern Spain. Rescue teams in Valencia and Barcelona reached stranded people on rooftops. The Spanish government pledged reconstruction aid and €23.5 million of financial support.

Stay Safe

If you live in flood‑prone areas, move valuables to higher ground, keep a flares and a battery‑powered radio handy, and listen to local authorities for evacuation orders.
