In brief

Storm Adam hit southern France on Tuesday, sending massive floods through streets, trapping residents and causing at least four fatalities – including two young women and a tragic incident in Corsica. Emergency shelters opened in towns like Mouriès and Saint-Martin-de-Crau while roads and train lines were shut down. French officials warned of further severe weather as Storm Austen rolls into the northwest, sparking an orange wind alert for five western departments. Meanwhile, Spain faced its own devastation with heavy rains killing three people. Government aid and rescue operations are underway across the Mediterranean region.

At least four people have died in France, and one other has been injured, after flooding caused by Storm Adam.

The storm triggered widespread flooding across southern France on Tuesday, inundating streets and disrupting transport.

The deaths included two women aged 86 and 26 who were found drowned in a cellar in the Bouches-du-Rhône region.

Corsica was also hit by severe weather: a 4x4 vehicle was swept away by floodwaters, one occupant escaped, another was found dead.

In the towns of Mouriès and Saint-Martin-de-Crau, dozens of residents were accommodated in emergency shelters after the floods hit. Officials said one person had been injured in that area.

Roads and train lines were disrupted, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot wrote on X. "The water has risen to unprecedented levels," prefect Jacques Witkowski said. He added that authorities were mobilised at an exceptional level to resolve several issues.

More severe weather is forecast: Storm Austen is moving in from the Atlantic and is expected to reach north‑west France, prompting an orange‑level wind warning for five western departments.

Spanish authorities are also dealing with the aftermath of Storm Adam, which already brought heavy flooding to eastern Spain, killing at least three people. Helicopters were deployed to rescue people stranded on rooftops, and a €23.5 m aid package was approved for those affected.
