President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, passed away after a heart condition – a shock to Tanzania’s political scene.

Tanzania’s first First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, died on Monday while being treated in Zanzibar’s Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. Vice‑President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the passing and announced funeral plans in Kizimkazi, on the island of Zanzibar. The former agricultural academic, who kept a low public profile, was a lifelong partner of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and a respected figure in local politics. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed deep sorrow, and the national media reported a full tribute to the late First Gentleman. The family, which spans four children, will hold a traditional burial to honor his memory.

Funeral arrangements are already underway in Kizimkazi, the village on Zanzibar where the First Gentleman will be buried. The event will also bring his family and close friends together in a communal remembrance.

Hafidh Ameir had kept a low profile throughout his career as an agricultural academic. He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when President Hassan took office in 2021. Though rarely seen at public events, he was a lifelong companion and has now left a profound personal legacy.

The Vice‑President led the tributes, conveying condolences to President Hassan, Ameir’s heirs and the wider nation. On the international front, Kenyan President William Ruto wrote on social media, "President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son," expressing deep sorrow.

Ameir and Samia married in 1978, before she entered national politics. Together they raised four children – three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who currently serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives as part of the National Assembly.
