Three men have been found guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, and their US friend Carter Rhoad during a surfing trip in Mexico.
The full names of the convicted men were withheld for legal reasons; they are identified only as Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús.
During the trial, the court heard the victims were killed in a botched robbery of their truck in a secluded beach area, and their bodies were later dumped down a well with gunshot wounds to their heads.
The murders shocked the world, especially Australia, where the area is usually safe for beachgoers.
Debra Robinson, the brothers’ mother, and her husband Martin testified in court, saying the verdict “takes the future we had imagined with them.”
Families of the US friend joined the trial by video link.
The prosecution sought 150 years in prison for each defendant, but sentences are yet to be announced.
The case highlights that extreme violence can still occur in popular Mexican beach towns and calls for stronger security measures.
