In brief

After the U.S. slapped hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the European Union is stepping up to retaliate with their own package of tariffs, signaling a brewing trade conflict.

President Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the European Union, accusing it of unfair practices against the U.S. With recent tariffs imposed on American imports, expected to impact $28 billion in European exports, the E.U. has now unleashed a series of retaliatory tariffs. Starting April 1, these tariffs could hit as hard as 50% on products like Harley Davidson motorcycles and Kentucky bourbon, with additional waves targeting key American agricultural and industrial goods soon after.European officials had hoped for negotiations to ease tensions and avoid a trade war. “But you need both hands to clap,” stated Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission's trade minister, pointing out that the E.U. was ready for talks to resolve the situation peacefully. However, with rising frustrations on both sides, it appears that a deal may be hard to come by.
