DALLAS — Federal prosecutors in Texas announced charges against six more individuals as part of a terrorism-related investigation following a shooting incident outside a Texas immigration detention center in July. This indictment, issued recently, expands previous charges and draws on President Trump's declaration designating the movement known as antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, amidst ongoing discussions about political violence and unrest in the U.S.
The shooting occurred on July 4 outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, injuring a police officer. Allegations against the group include rioting, attempted murder, and using weapons and explosives. Prosecutors allege they threw fireworks at the facility and shot at police, critically injuring an officer who has since recovered.
As part of the case, six individuals are set to enter guilty pleas, while the defense alleges a lack of substantial evidence to support the government’s claims, leading to ongoing legal debates about the definition and actions relating to antifa. Patrick McClain, an attorney for one of the defendants, stated that his client was never involved in any such organized groups, suggesting that the prosecution's narrative lacks scientific backing.
