In brief

In mid‑October, thousands of students marched on Tirana’s government buildings, setting part of the education ministry on fire and attacking other ministries. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, leading to arrests and a tense showdown. The protests grew from a demand for better university conditions to a broader criticism of corruption and the government’s handling of a luxury resort plan tied to Jared Kushner. While some leaders urged calm, others praised the demonstrators’ courage. The movement highlights a generation’s frustration and the urgent call for democratic change in Albania.

On a hot Wednesday, a thunderous wave of thousands of students surged through Tirana’s streets. Their chant was simple: better universities, real jobs and a cleaner government.

The first target was the education ministry. Protesters smashed windows, hurled rocks and, in a dramatic move, set a part of the building ablaze. The blaze was later joined by attacks on the Prime Minister’s office and the finance and interior ministries.

Police fought back with tear gas and water cannons. Supposedly 16 people were arrested for “violent acts.” Yet voices in the crowd shouted that the protests were a fight against a corrupt system that hurt everyday Albanians.

Sidelined was Albania’s dream luxury resort that was tied to Jared Kushner’s name. The project sparked the “Flamingo Revolution,” a wider uprising demanding PM Edi Rama’s resignation. The protests have evolved from a campus grievance into a nation‑wide call for transparency and change.

Despite police pressure, the spirit of the young demonstrators remains strong. In the eyes of many, a spark of hope is beginning to ignite across Europe’s southern borders.
