In brief

A 37‑year‑old father from Essex was fined €3,000 after his two‑year‑old son fell to his death from a balcony at a five‑star resort in Cyprus. The boy dropped nearly 40 ft from the fourth floor on July 12, the first day of his family's holiday. In court, Foster admitted a reckless act and was sentenced after the judge noted his tears and support from his lawyer and parents. The case has sparked calls for stricter child‑safety measures in hotels.

A father, Joshua Foster, 37, from Essex, was fined €3,000 after his two‑year‑old son tragically fell to his death from the fourth‑floor balcony of the King Evelthon Beach Hotel & Resort in Chlorakas, Cyprus.

The incident occurred on 12 July, the first day of the family’s holiday. Foster claimed he thought the window was closed when he lifted his son onto the windowsill to show him the waterpark below.

He was found guilty of causing death through a reckless or dangerous act in the Paphos District Court, which sentenced him to a fine; admissions of guilt were made under strict legal guidelines.

Foster, visibly shaken, broke down during sentencing and then hugged his lawyer and parents as the judge delivered the verdict.

Authorities have urged parents to pay extra vigilance when their children are near windows or balconies, especially during vacations.
