At least 94 Palestinian prisoners and detainees have died in Israeli custody in less than two years, a well-regarded Israeli human rights group says.
A new report by Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) alleges a practice of systematic killings and cover-ups covering the period from the deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, to August 31, 2025. In the prior decade, fewer than 30 Palestinians died while incarcerated.
PHRI claims that thousands have been detained since the conflict escalated, with allegations of severe human rights violations occurring under Israeli policies. Notably, the report points to 52 deaths in military prisons and 42 in civilian jails, attributing these to physical violence, medical neglect, or both.
The Israel Prison Service (IPS) stated that it operates under strict legal standards and does not comment on external allegations. However, PHRI highlights ongoing concerns over access to information and rights afforded to detained individuals.
The report has triggered widespread discussion regarding the treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody, with some incidents sparking national controversy.
This alarming situation remains under scrutiny as human rights advocates call for accountability and reform within the Israeli detention system.
