What’s the Big Deal?
On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced the Super Intelligence Force, a new taskforce to oversee artificial intelligence policy. The group will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and will work to keep the United States ahead of other countries when it comes to the technology.
Trump said the force will coordinate the federal government’s engagement with consumers, public‑interest groups, religious groups, critical‑infrastructure firms and companies that build “Super Intelligence.” The team is to report directly to the President and the White House Chief of Staff.
Three days earlier, Trump signed an executive order that renamed AI to “Super Intelligence” to avoid the word “artificial.” The order tells government departments to start using the new term in reports, websites and other official communications.
Industry leaders have reacted with mixed feelings. OpenAI chief Sam Altman said the benefits of AI outweigh its risks, while Musk tweeted that he will rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI. Some experts worry the re‑branding will create confusion about what AI actually is.
Trump has so far dismissed calls for stronger oversight and prefers to leave regulation largely in the hands of the companies that build the technology.
Will the new taskforce actually shape the future of AI in America, or simply be a political speech? Only time will tell.
