In a surprising turn of events, President Trump has revoked Canada's invitation to join his newly formed Board of Peace, following a recent diplomatic spat.

President Trump has officially canceled Canada's participation in his Board of Peace after Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of potential fractures in the US-led global order. Trump announced the decision on social media, despite Canada previously expressing willingness to join without paying the hefty membership fee. This move comes in the wake of tension between the two nations, particularly after Carney's remarks at the World Economic Forum, which seemingly displeased Trump.

Meanwhile, EU chief Antonio Costa said European leaders have serious doubts about the scope of the board, but were willing to work with the body in Gaza.

The board, which gives Trump wide decision-making powers as chairman, is being billed by the US as a new international organization for resolving conflicts.

Trump did not give a reason in his post for revoking Canada's offer. Carney's office has yet to respond, but the Prime Minister had previously indicated he would accept Trump’s invite on principle.

However, Ottawa recently stated it would not pay the $1bn membership fee, which Trump has said permanent members will need to fund the board.

Trump's Board of Peace was initially thought to be aimed at ending the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and overseeing reconstruction efforts.

But without mentioning the Palestinian territory, its proposed charter appears to be designed to overshadow UN functions, with Trump positioned as chairman for life.

Approximately 60 nations were invited to join, with about 35 already signing up, including various countries such as Argentina, Belarus, and Turkey. Notably, major UN Security Council members like China and the UK have yet to join, with concerns raised about participants like Russia's Vladimir Putin.

After a speech in Davos, where Carney advocated for middle powers against economic coercion, Trump commented that Canada should be grateful for US support, which incited a rebuttal from Carney stating that Canada thrives independently.
