Trump’s Anime Move Sparks Japan’s Outrage

Trump’s latest Truth Social video, where he sketched himself as the anime hero Naruto, sparked a wave of backlash across Japan.

Fans have rallied behind a petition with over 19,000 signatures, urging the White House to respect the creators behind beloved characters like Pikachu, Yu‑Gi‑Oh! and Dragon Ball.

Pokémon Company International formally condemned the posts, saying they had no permission and that the company’s mission is “to bring the world together,” not to push a political agenda.

“Using these characters in a military context goes against their spirit of courage and friendship,” said Nana Suzuki, a Kanagawa resident who launched the petition.

Not everyone disagrees – some X users found Trump’s mash‑up “hilarious” and praised the worldwide reach of anime, pointing out that even Japan’s biggest cultural export could be on the political stage.

While the White House remains silent, the online debate highlights the power of pop culture in global diplomacy and the rising voice of fans worldwide.
