Trump to Talk with Putin Over Plague Lab Worker Death
U.S. President Donald Trump announced he will soon speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the fatal accident involving a 28‑year‑old plague biophysicist at a research institute in Irkutsk, Siberia. The conversation is expected to take place by Thursday, with Trump stating he can report back “probably” that day.
Russian officials are investigating the cause. They report the victim, named Darya Shipilova, died of “pneumonia of an undetermined etiology,” with no confirmed link to the deadly bacterium Yersinia pestis. Although some Russian media hinted at a broken test tube, federal health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor downplayed spill‑over possibilities.
The World Health Organization urged transparency with the International Health Regulations, warning that pneumonic plague can become fatal within 24 hours if untreated. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the need for rapid, complete data sharing to assess public‑health risk.
The incident prompted the United States to offer aid and “measures” if the situation proves more serious than reported, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While the bacterium thrives in rodent habitats, the lab is a century‑old facility established to study plague in response to early 20th‑century outbreaks. With nearly 200 people quarantined in the region, both countries face scrutiny over containment protocols.
