In brief
In response to potential threats targeting Israeli tourists, Sri Lankan authorities arrested three individuals and heightened security measures in popular tourist areas.
The police in Sri Lanka have arrested three individuals over concerns about threats aimed at tourists, particularly Israeli visitors. The arrests occurred after warnings from both the U.S. Embassy and Israel’s National Security Council advised citizens to stay away from Arugam Bay, a favored surf spot. According to Vijitha Herath, a government spokesman, further investigations are underway to determine the nature of these threats. The U.S. Embassy reported receiving credible information regarding potential attacks on tourist locations in Arugam Bay, leading to immediate travel restrictions for its personnel. Likewise, Israel urged its citizens to exit the area and avoid displaying anything identifying them as Israeli. Britain also issued a travel advisory emphasizing increased risk from possible terrorist activities targeting places frequented by foreigners. In an effort to bolster safety, security has been heightened across tourist hotspots, including Colombo, Ella, and Weligama, especially due to gatherings related to Jewish observances.
