Mass shooting in Johannesburg kills 12

Police in South Africa say at least 12 people were shot to death in an informal settlement in Cleveland, a suburb of Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.

The attack left another nine people injured and a man who succumbed to his wounds in hospital, according to the police statement.

The police say the suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland, then entered the settlement through both entrances and fired on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

The manhunt for the attackers is underway. A local police department responded to a “complaint of shooting in progress” at 23:10 local time, and emergency services treated the injured.

South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates, around 60 people killed per day on average. Shootings in informal settlements are common, often linked to gang violence or personal disputes.

The motive for the attack is unknown, as part of the ongoing investigation. Last year, a mass shooting at a Johannesburg tavern claimed nine lives.
