US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, a first known American strike in weeks.
The USS Central Command said the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. The strike, reportedly by missiles, was aimed at stopping the threat to shipping lanes.
Iran’s IRGC said that the attack killed and wounded several people and called it a "strategic mistake" by the Trump regime. Tehran’s media said two civilians died and two others were injured.
The incident comes after the U.S. cleared all mines from the strait’s main lane early this month and warns that new mines will be destroyed.
The Strait of Hormuz is a global chokepoint, with about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Even minor skirmishes can ripple across global markets.
Alongside the military action, Washington announced a fresh sanctions campaign on August 24th aimed at isolating Tehran and expanding secondary sanctions on its allies. Iran’s officials dismissed the move as “propaganda.”
