Senior Pentagon officials have arrived in Ukraine to discuss efforts to end the war with Russia, the US military reports.
The team, led by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday when he returns from a trip to Turkey.
Reports indicate that the US and Russia are preparing a new peace plan which includes major concessions from Ukraine, though neither Washington nor Moscow has confirmed this.
Earlier, a missile and drone attack in Ternopil resulted in at least 26 fatalities.
Secretary Driscoll's visit is part of a fact-finding mission and symbolizes the highest-level military talks in Ukraine since Trump's presidency. Emphasizing collaborations for defense agreements, Driscoll's negotiations could pave the way for possible ceasefire discussions.
However, reports suggest that proposed plans might involve Ukraine ceding territories and curtailing its military capabilities, terms that President Zelensky and his allies are resistant to.
The US military delegation aims to navigate the complex landscape of negotiations amidst ongoing hostilities and calls for an immediate ceasefire.
