In brief
The Trump administration's move could have major implications for environmental regulations and wildlife preservation.
The Trump administration has taken steps to rescind federal protections for the lesser prairie chicken, a flamboyant bird known for its distinctive courtship behavior. This move, filed in a Texas court, claims that the previous government's decision to list the bird as endangered was incorrect. As agriculture and energy companies eye the bird's grassland habitat, officials highlight that the species has seen a drastic decline from potentially millions to just around 30,000.Habitat loss is the primary threat to the lesser prairie chicken, whose survival has been at the center of environmental disputes for years. The court filing expressed an intention to reassess the bird's status by late 2026. In the meantime, while federal protections under the Endangered Species Act may be lifted, the filing insists that there are numerous conservation programs already in place supporting the lesser prairie chicken.
