In brief

Gary Lineker's departure marks the close of a significant chapter for both him and the BBC’s beloved soccer program as he looks forward to other exciting projects.

Gary Lineker, the legendary English sports figure and former soccer player, is set to step away from the BBC's iconic show “Match of the Day.” After 25 fantastic years anchoring the highlights program, he'll conclude his role at the end of the current Premier League season. BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski announced this milestone transition in an email to staff, asserting that the show is a treasured aspect of British television, enjoyed by millions every week. Lineker has been at the helm since 1999, delivering exciting recaps of the day’s matches, but will continue to report for the BBC during the 2026 World Cup and cover the F.A. Cup in the 2025-2026 season. While his departure from “Match of the Day” feels momentous, Lineker will remain involved with the BBC, contributing to other broadcasts. The show, which began airing in 1964, has long been a staple for soccer fans, attracting vast audiences. Apart from his work with the BBC, Lineker has engaged with other media outlets and ventured into podcasts, being a part of the Goalhanger production company which produces several popular shows. Lineker had a celebrated career on the field, being an outstanding striker and England's national team captain in the 1980s. He made history as the only English player to be the leading scorer for three clubs: Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton. After retiring in 1994 with an impressive record, he quickly transitioned into broadcasting. Not one to shy away from expressing views on social issues, Lineker faced controversy in 2023 when his remarks on government immigration policies led to a temporary suspension. However, Kay-Jelski confirmed that this decision to part ways with “Match of the Day” is unrelated to prior conflicts. In a statement, Lineker expressed his enthusiasm to continue his long-standing relationship with BBC Sport, indicating that new adventures await him beyond the iconic highlights show.
