In brief
Amid international uproar over its actions, Israel claims new evidence shows Hamas uses a Gaza hospital for military purposes. The director of the hospital is currently detained, raising questions about the legality and ethics of military operations involving civilian facilities.
In a recent video shared by the Israeli military, claims were made that Hamas and other militant groups used the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza as a stronghold for their activities. This comes after the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital's director, who is under pressure from international observers over his circumstances. The footage allegedly shows a detainee confessing to his dual roles as a cleaning supervisor and Hamas fighter, stating the hospital was used for weapon transfers, patrols, and as an observation point. Despite the serious nature of these claims, independent verification has not been possible, and concerns grow about the treatment of detainees in Israeli custody. Israeli military laws typically classify hospitals as protected spaces, protected under international law, however, if they are misused for attacks or military operations, they can potentially become legitimate targets. Israel’s military operations have previously led to numerous staff detentions and attacks on the facility, highlighted by ongoing debates about the fallout on humanitarian processes amidst the conflict.
