In brief

A letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio reveals that funding for tracking Ukrainian children abducted by Russia has been halted, possibly resulting in the deletion of critical data.

The U.S. State Department has announced the end of funding aimed at tracking thousands of Ukrainian children believed to have been abducted by Russian forces. Concerns have arisen that vital data from a Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab database may have been deleted. Following an executive order by President Trump in late January that halted most foreign aid, contracts to organizations assisting Ukraine were also cut, including the Yale lab's work. Congressman Greg Landsman, a Democrat from Ohio, is leading efforts to seek clarification from Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the status of this potentially critical information. The letter emphasizes that the end of support could have devastating effects on efforts to repatriate these abducted children. The Yale lab had received $26 million in funding over three years to document war crimes in Ukraine. Without access to this data, efforts to assist Ukrainian authorities may be severely compromised.
