Fuego, Guatemala’s most active volcano, erupted on Monday, launching lava and ash high into the air. The eruption triggered pyroclastic currents that flowed downhill, and a nationwide orange alert was issued by Conred. Residents on the slopes were evacuated, schools were closed, and hikers were warned to avoid the area. The last major eruption in 2018 killed over 200 people. Fuego Volcano Goes Wild

On Monday, Fuego—the most active volcano in the Western Hemisphere—burst into flames, spewing lava and ash toward the skies. The pyroclastic currents flowed down its southeastern slope carrying hot gas, ash, and rock fragments.

The government agency Conred raised a nationwide orange alert and warned residents to close windows and doors. Schools near the volcano were shut down and three villages were evacuated.

Fuego lies only 16 km west of the tourist hub of Antigua and attracts hikers, which makes the danger tighter. Conred said visitors must stay away from the slopes while scientists monitor the activity.
