Fuego Volcano Goes Wild
On Monday, Fuego—the most active volcano in the Western Hemisphere—burst into flames, spewing lava and ash toward the skies. The pyroclastic currents flowed down its southeastern slope carrying hot gas, ash, and rock fragments.
The government agency Conred raised a nationwide orange alert and warned residents to close windows and doors. Schools near the volcano were shut down and three villages were evacuated.
Fuego lies only 16 km west of the tourist hub of Antigua and attracts hikers, which makes the danger tighter. Conred said visitors must stay away from the slopes while scientists monitor the activity.
The volcano last erupted in 2018, killing over 200 people in a sudden pyroclastic flow that rushed down a ravine. Live video shows lava shooting high above the volcano.
