Israel is opening tenders for 1,200 new settlement homes in a key stretch of the occupied West Bank, a move that drew harsh criticism from several Western nations.

In a joint statement, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Canada called the plans unacceptable and urged Israel to retract the projects immediately.

The E1 area, between East Jerusalem and the settlement of Maale Adumim, is seen by many as a threat to a future Palestinian state and a potential divider of the West Bank.

The call comes as Israel has pushed forward settlement expansion since late 2022 amid an ongoing Gaza war.
