Among them is eight-year-old Renee Smajstrla, who was at Camp Mystic, a renowned all-girls camp, when the flooding occurred. Her uncle expressed gratitude that she was surrounded by friends during her last moments, though the outcome was devastating.
Camp Mystic, which operates along the Guadalupe River, has reported that 27 children remain unaccounted for after the flood swept through. The camp has been a cherished space for personal growth and spirituality for nearly a century.
Jane Ragsdale, also a victim of the flooding, was the beloved director of Heart O’ the Hills camp. Celebrated as the “heart and soul” of the camp, her loss has left a significant void in the community she inspired and nurtured. Ragsdale had devoted decades to the camp, positively impacting countless campers and staff.
Tragically, other young girls and campers, like Sarah Marsh and Lila Bonner, are also confirmed lost. Their families remember them for their bright spirits and lively personalities, emphasizing the love and joy they brought in their short lives.
