In brief
Venezuelan immigrants face deportation disputes over due process rights as Justice Dept. files appeal against a ruling to allow them to contest their removal.
The Trump administration is shaking things up again! On June 10, it asked a federal appeals court to block a lower court order that would allow a group of Venezuelan immigrants to contest their deportations. This all started when, in March, scores of these Venezuelans were sent to El Salvador under a wartime law which has only been used a few times in history. They landed there under the Alien Enemies Act, and now many are stuck in a Salvadoran maximum-security prison, accused of connections to a gang.Just as the administration was due to outline how these nearly 140 deported individuals could challenge their removal, the Justice Department made its move. The judge in the case, James E. Boasberg, had previously urged officials not to go through with their deportation flights, warning them of potential contempt of court should they do so. Yet, flights proceeded, and the immigrants have been fighting to return ever since. Now, with the administration pushing against the ruling, this situation highlights the ongoing tension between court systems and immigration policies. Will the Venezuelans get their chance to present their side, or will the administration keep the door shut? Only time will tell!
