The Trump administration has announced new political review protocols for wind and solar energy projects, raising concerns about potential delays in renewable energy developments. The Interior Department's memo indicates that more than 68 types of actions related to wind and solar energy, which include federal permits, wildlife assessments, and site plans, will now require scrutiny from Secretary Doug Burgum's office instead of being handled by lower-level staff.
The agency stated the directive aims to remove "preferential treatment for unreliable, subsidy-dependent" renewable energy sources. Industry experts express worry that this broad policy could create bottlenecks for many projects, though only a small fraction are built on federal lands. Many private projects also work with the Interior Department to ensure compliance with federal regulations, hinting at widespread implications for the renewable sector.
