Zimbabwe’s flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, died after the helicopter they were in crashed near the town of Marondera, about 70 km east of Harare.

The crash happened around 17:00 local time on Wednesday evening. Police confirmed all six people on board – including two pilots – were killed. The helicopter was reportedly traveling from Gandami in Chikomba, where the couple had a new rural home under construction.

Chivayo, who earned the nickname “Sir Wicknell”, built a public profile through aggressive business deals, huge social‑media posts and lavish gifts to celebrities. He was a major contractor for government projects, a move that sparked criticism and investigations, although some charges were later dropped.

Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo told state broadcaster ZBC that the family was “devastated” by the tragedy. Kenyan leaders, and others, sent condolences, and the event has reignited conversation about safety standards for private flights.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the helicopter to fall from the sky. Emergency services were dispatched to the site, and a thorough probe will follow. Until then, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the risks that come with high‑profile lifestyles.
