Several NATO members are sending troops, artillery, and air defense systems to secure its eastern flank after what Poland called an unprecedented Russian drone incursion into its airspace.

Early on Wednesday, three Russian drones were shot down after crossing into Polish airspace, with additional drones found scattered across eastern Poland.

In response, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic confirmed they would send defense support, with Germany enhancing air policing over Poland and France deploying fighter jets. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz welcomed these commitments, emphasizing the need for tangible support in light of historical empty gestures.

This incident marks the most serious breach since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with Polish leaders asserting the incident was a deliberate test by Russia. The act prompted NATO to recognize the heightened threat and to bolster its eastern military presence as preparations for potential future incidents are underway.

Poland is also implementing restrictions on drones and air traffic near its eastern borders, alongside precautions taken by neighboring countries, highlighting the escalating concerns over regional security amidst ongoing military exercises by Russia and Belarus.
