NEW YORK (AP) — The vivid blue campaign signs with bold orange lettering were impossible to miss as Zohran Mamdani made his historic and improbable run for New York City mayor this summer.
On storefront windows and telephone poles from Queens to the Bronx, the 'Zohran for New York City' signs stood out from the standard red, white and blue campaign fodder, drawing inspiration from vibrant city life and Mamdani's Indian heritage.
Designing these visuals, Aneesh Bhoopathy aimed to evoke the lively culture of the city with colors reminiscent of bodegas and yellow cabs, showcasing New York's working-class roots.
The retro appeal of Mamdani’s branding not only set him apart but also reminded voters of better political times. His colors and design resonated, with his opponent Andrew Cuomo even adopting similar aesthetics after their initial competition.
Mamdani's success illustrates the relevance of bold design in modern campaigning, signaling a shift away from traditional political visuals and how cultural identity plays a central role in campaigning.
