In brief

Authorities are working hard to recapture these young monkeys as they enjoy their newfound freedom!

In an unusual turn of events, 43 monkeys have escaped from Alpha Genesis, a research facility in South Carolina, after a keeper accidentally left their pen open. The playful rhesus macaques are now believed to be wandering around the scenic Lowcountry area, and police are urging residents to secure their homes and report any monkey sightings.According to Yemassee Police, these young female monkeys each weigh about 7lbs (3.2kg) and have not been tested for diseases yet. As the search continues, officers are utilizing thermal imaging cameras and have set traps to help capture the skittish group. The CEO of Alpha Genesis, Greg Westergaard, expressed his frustration at the escape and hopes the monkeys would return on their own after tiring of the outdoors. This isn't the first time monkeys have escaped from the facility; previous incidents in 2016 and 2014 saw smaller groups make their getaway. Law enforcement reassured the public that there is “almost no danger” from the macaques, who are known for being mischievous. The situation is closely monitored, and congresswoman Nancy Mace is keeping constituents updated on the developments. As the search continues amid rainy weather conditions, authorities are hoping the sweet scent of apples will lure the monkeys back home soon!
