In a shocking case that has captivated South Africa, Racquel Smith, 35, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for selling her 6-year-old daughter, Joshlin Smith, who remains missing since February 2024. The court found her guilty of trafficking and kidnapping, and two accomplices were also sentenced to life.
Judge Nathan Erasmus noted the mother showed no remorse, even lying until the day of sentencing. Prosecutors revealed Smith's drug addiction led her to sell her daughter for approximately 20,000 rand ($1,100). The girl disappeared from their home in Saldanha Bay, and despite extensive searches by law enforcement and locals, she has not been found.
The case drew enormous public interest, resulting in court proceedings being held in a community center, broadcast on national television. Prosecutors highlighted the emotional weight of the case, urging for a life sentence based on the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Joshlin's whereabouts.
Joshlin’s grandmother, Rita Yon, expressed her anguish, stating, “We are still missing Joshlin,” revealing the emotional toll on the family as they grapple with the devastating circumstances. As the investigation continues, the truth about Joshlin’s fate remains hauntingly unclear.
