In brief
Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that former president Jair Bolsonaro will face trial for his involvement in a scheme to overturn the 2022 election outcome, including an alleged plan to assassinate the president-elect.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been ordered to stand trial by the Supreme Court for his role in a conspiracy to maintain power after his 2022 election defeat. He is accused of attempting to overturn the electoral results and plotting to assassinate the president-elect, according to a ruling made public on Wednesday. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes emphasized that evidence shows Bolsonaro was aware of and engaged in coup plans. Alongside him, seven associates, including his running mate and a former spy chief, face charges of "violent abolition of the democratic rule of law" and "coup d'état." In a surprising twist, Bolsonaro appeared on the first day of the hearings but chose to remain silent. His legal team acknowledged the gravity of the plot but denied any direct involvement of Bolsonaro, claiming the charges are politically motivated.
