In brief
In a surprising turn of events, Chinese hackers are exploiting the ongoing war to seek defense secrets from Russia, highlighting complex geopolitical dynamics.
China has launched a series of cyberattacks against Russia, despite their proclaimed partnership. Since the onset of the Ukraine war in 2022, analysts report that Chinese hacking groups are persistently targeting Russian government and military facilities to uncover critical military secrets. Notably, these hacking attempts intensified shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While Presidents Putin and Xi have publicly celebrated their alliance, China seems to view Russia as a potentially weak target for intelligence gathering. As per TeamT5, a Taiwan-based cybersecurity firm, one notable group, Sanyo, impersonated a prominent Russian engineering firm to extract information regarding nuclear submarines.China is by far wealthier than Russia and boasts significant scientific and military expertise. However, Chinese military analysts have expressed that their troops lack sufficient battlefield experience. Thus, they perceive the Ukraine conflict as an opportunity to learn modern warfare tactics and Western military technology. Che Chang, a researcher from TeamT5, pointed out that China aims to accumulate strategic insights from Russia’s military operations and advancements. While the success of these hacking operations remains ambiguous—largely due to Russia's silence on the breaches—an internal Russian counterintelligence document unmistakably indicates alarm over these intrusions. The document identifies China as a potential adversary and underscores its ambition to capture Russian defense technology and insights from the Ukraine conflict.
