In brief

The UK government secretly resettled thousands of Afghan nationals following a 2022 data leak that exposed their details, only recently acknowledged amid political sensitivities surrounding immigration.

In a surprising revelation, the UK government disclosed that it had resettled over 4,500 Afghans after accidentally leaking the personal information of 18,000 individuals who had worked with British forces prior to the Taliban's return to power. This information was initially exposed in 2022 due to a security breach, but until now, it had remained largely under wraps, thanks to a "super injunction" that prevented any media coverage. The Defense Ministry, led by Secretary John Healey, admitted to the error on Tuesday, explaining that an email containing sensitive data was mistakenly sent outside of official channels. It wasn't until August 2023 that the full extent of the breach became public knowledge, spurring the government into action. In response, the Conservative government initiated a secret program known as the Afghan Response Route, spending around $537 million to assist those in dire need of protection. While 600 people and their families are still awaiting relocation, Healey emphasized that he would end the program and share a report showing little evidence of immediate danger posed by the Taliban to those whose data was compromised. As immigration remains a hot topic in British politics, this unforeseen situation raises important questions about accountability and transparency in government actions during crises.
