In brief

After a tumultuous two weeks of high-profile talks, including discussions between Putin and Trump, Russia remains steadfast, rejecting calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine. While Moscow believes it has gained ground, the prospect of a peaceful resolution seems elusive.

Wandering the vast grounds of the Kremlin late at night, I’m reminded of a thrilling political novel. I had arrived at 5 PM for an anticipated event with President Putin, only to find myself accidentally lost within the iconic Russian fortress. Instead of a press conference, Putin made a televised statement, proposing direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. This marked the beginning of a whirlwind two weeks.Despite optimism stemming from peace talks, there’s a sense we’re no closer to peace. Recent developments—including a high-profile call between Putin and Trump—have resulted in vague commitments without concrete action. Russia continues to refuse an unconditional ceasefire and remains adamant about holding on to seized Ukrainian territories. The Kremlin maneuvered skillfully to sidestep European ultimatums for a ceasefire, proposing discussions that ultimately placated Trump but offered little for Ukraine and Europe. The low-level delegation that attended talks in Istanbul only reinforced doubts about Russia's intentions, while the Russian media asserts Russia's diplomatic success, portraying it as a winner in global negotiations.Meanwhile, Trump's stance appears more supportive of Moscow than Kyiv, leading to concerns over the legitimacy of Ukraine’s leadership. As Trump signals a reluctance to escalate pressures on Russia, Moscow's confidence grows. The rumors of new sanctions don’t seem to faze the Kremlin, which is navigating a complex international landscape to maintain its aggressive posture. In essence, while the diplomatic dialogue continues, the path to peace remains obscure—much like my bemusing adventure within the Kremlin.
