In brief

In a landmark agreement, 3M will allocate up to $450 million over 25 years to compensate for PFAS-related groundwater contamination in New Jersey.

3M, the Minnesota-based company notorious for producing harmful chemicals known as PFAS, has committed to paying New Jersey between $400 million and $450 million over the next quarter-century. This settlement is aimed at rectifying contamination at the Chambers Works facility in Deepwater, N.J., which has been linked to potential health risks like cancer and metabolic disorders due to "forever chemicals." The state has been actively pursuing damages since 2019, stating that the industrial site polluted local drinking water sources. While this settlement marks New Jersey's largest clean-water agreement, DuPont and Chemours, which also contributed to the contamination, have not participated and may still face trial.
