In brief

The story of Hvaldimir, a beluga whale spotted off Norway in 2019 wearing a harness, unfolds as experts confirm its connection to the Russian military. Though trained for guarding, Hvaldimir's spirited nature led to its escape from the Arctic base, raising questions about its life and tragic end.

In 2019, a friendly beluga whale named Hvaldimir swam into the hearts of many off Norway’s coast, but it was also a mystery, with speculation swirling that it was a Russian “spy whale.” Now, Dr. Olga Shpak, a marine expert, believes the whale did indeed belong to the Russian military, likely trained to protect a naval base. She affirms that Hvaldimir wasn’t a spy but rather an adventurous spirit who simply sought freedom. The beluga first gained attention when it approached fishermen, curiously rubbing against their boat. Its harness bore the words "Equipment St Petersburg," and it seemed desperate for help. Dr. Shpak's insights, based on her connections in the Russian marine mammal community, reveal that Hvaldimir was called Andruha before escaping from a military program in the Russian Arctic. This quirky whale charmed visitors and struggled to feed itself, earning the nickname reflecting both its species and a nod to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hvaldimir traveled along Norway’s coast and was spotted as far south as Sweden. Sadly, its adventures ended in tragedy. In September 2024, Hvaldimir’s body was found near Risavika, after a post-mortem revealed the cause of death was due to a stick lodged in its mouth. Despite rumors of foul play, Norwegian authorities found no evidence of human involvement in this mysterious marine tale. Hvaldimir's life raises questions about animals trained for military purposes and the challenges of their return to the wild, ultimately leaving a bittersweet legacy behind.
