In brief

Officials are tracking possible exposure paths as public safety measures are heightened.

In a serious health announcement, Canadian officials confirmed the country's first case of human bird flu on November 13, 2024. A teenager in British Columbia was hospitalized in critical condition after contracting the H5N1 virus. The health authorities are conducting investigations to determine how the teenager got infected, as they found no direct links to local poultry farms, which are usually the main sources of the virus in Canada.Despite the alarming nature of the case, health officials assess that bird flu poses a low risk to the general public, primarily because it is not easily transmissible between humans. However, outbreaks and mutations, such as those reported in U.S. dairy cattle, could raise virus transmission potential. Health authorities reported that 36 individuals who were in contact with the teenager have tested negative for the virus, and preventative antiviral medications have been administered. Meanwhile, no cases of bird flu have been found in Canadian dairy farms, though numerous poultry farms have been affected since October 2024.The hospitalized teenager initially sought care in an emergency room for respiratory symptoms, including fever and cough, before being admitted to B.C. Children’s Hospital. Previous records indicate only one other case of bird flu in a Canadian patient, which occurred in 2014 during overseas travel.Public health messages have been issued, urging people to avoid handling dead birds and advising poultry farmers to keep their flocks indoors. Dr. Brian Ward, an infectious disease expert, emphasized the importance of these precautions as the situation unfolds.
